Bringing fun and music from Nashville to Melbourne

Fresh from her amazing trip to Nashville to cut a new record, I’m Jellyhomegrown children's entertainer, Rachel Parkinson is back and more motivated than ever.

“Nashville was a hoot!” says the Melbourne singer.

“I recorded at three different studios in Nashville, which was a sensational experience."

Rachel's catchy, fun, educational songs about food, germs, animals, monsters and brushing your teeth have been heard on Qantas, Virgin, Air Vanuatu, Malaysia and Singapore Airlines’ inflight entertainment systems.

The tunes are also now getting a thrashing on the new ABC Kids Listen app, alongside artists including Justine Clarke, The Wiggles, Jay Laga'aia and Peter Combe.

"I’m honoured to be alongside such great company!” she says.

In this digital era, what sets Rachel's music and movement classes apart from others is that the music she plays is all live - Rachel strums guitar and sings, which isn’t so common when many other children's music programs just rely on iPods for music.

“Live music is great.  The children respond to it, the adults love it, and I love playing it.  It’s so much more engaging, interactive, interesting and personal having live music in a class as opposed to just prancing around to CDs,” she says.

During her recent trip to Nashville, the Melbourne singer recorded at Blackbird Studios, famous for recording more modern artists than any other studio.

"All of the recording was done in Nashville, then I came back to Melbourne to finish mixing it at my favourite studio in Melbourne, Pony Music.”

The incredible musicians on the new album, I’m Jelly, include a bunch of Nashville locals (who’ve recorded with the likes of Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Lionel Ritchie, Richard Marx, Jewel) plus a few Aussies.  Says Rachel,  “There are also some amazing women who played on the album – it’s such a male-dominated industry and has been forever.  There are loads of fabulous female musicians; I’d love to have even more on my next record.”

This year, she received welcome recognition when her song, Yeah, We Went to the Zoo, from new album, I’m Jelly was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Says Rachel, ”It’s one of the largest songwriting and music contests in the world and they get submissions from over a hundred countries, so to be a semi-finalists is very exciting!”

Why learn music?

Research has shown that playing music uses more parts of the brain than any other activity.  It can help improve long-term memory and lead to better brain development. Movement, music and emotion release a feel-good hormone called dopamine.  The more we respond to music by moving to it, the more the brain releases dopamine, which makes us feel good!

Learning music can develop many skills, including social skills, discipline and patience. It can boost self-esteem, develop listening skills, academic and physical skills, help express emotions and improve balance and coordination.

Rachel has run her Little Feet Music class for children, aged 6 months to 5 years, for the past 14 years. Classes are in Albert Park, Beaumaris and Black Rock.  She’ll even come and perform at your birthday party or child care centre.

Call 03 9587 1216 or email info@littlefeetmusic.com.au for more info! You can hear Rachel Parkinson’s Little Feet Music via the new ABC Kids Listen app, Spotify, iTunes, GooglePlay or buy CDs from www.littlefeetmusic.com.au

Little Feet Music albums on inflight entertainment and Kinderling Radio
The lovely people over at Qantas have been playing my Little Feet Music album, Giggle & Jiggle since January 2015, which I'm pretty thrilled about.  Virgin Australia jumped onboard in November, and have been playing Giggle & Jiggle AND Jump Around on their inflight system.  Make sure you have a listen when you're next on a Qantas or Virgin flight!  If you don't want to spend a fortune flying just to hear my albums, you can buy then online.  Do it here!

The sensational online radio station, Kinderling Radio regularly plays songs from both albums.  Tune in online for a listen!  It's kids' radio that adults love too!

Recording in Nashville!  St Kilda Festival!

I went to Nashville last month to make a new Little Feet Music album.  It was amazing fun.  The players were absolutely sensational.  Nick Buda (Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Missy Higgins, Lionel Richie) on drums, Tim Marks (Taylor Swift, Jeff Beck, Jewel, Lionel Richie) and Steve Mackey (Dolly Parton, John Oates, Pulp, Florence and the Machine) on bass guitar, Sam Hawksley (The Seekers, The Whitlams, John Farnham, Don Walker, Wendy Matthews) played amazing guitar parts and Bill Risby (Leo Sayer, Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole, John Williamson) on piano and keys all did an amazing job of turning my little ditties into fabulous pieces of fabulousness!  There’s still a bit of work to finish off the album, but so far it’s incredible!  Subscribe to the Little Feet Music YouTube channel for some upcoming previews!

The Little Feet Music Band is playing St Kilda Festival on Sunday, 12 February.  We’re on the Kidzone Stage at Catani Gardens at 1pm!  Bingle the Bear will be performing with Sandy (drums), Damien (bass) and me!
